There are 2 aspects to load speed – our connection speed and the page we are trying to access speed.
Here we are referring to page load speed.
How often we download some file from site A and it goes at 2-3 Mbps and a moment later we download another file from site B and it gives us only 120 Kbps.
When our connection is 50-100 Mbps and a page loads in 1 second but another page takes 8 sec to load, so obviously the latter one will be penalized by Search Engines and visitors.

Speed should definitely be a factor in search, but I hope that's a non-issue when we're reaching internet speeds of 50-100 Mbps.
